Hearing the Ukulele Playing Hawaiian Music Renewed Ed Garces'
Passion for the Instrument and Ignited Enthusiasm for His New Home

Ed and his Ukulele

When he was just a boy, Ed Garces picked up a ukulele and discovered a passion. Playing through his teens, starring in a band with much older musicians, he established a reputation for musical talent and a gift for playing fast-paced tunes. Because he was forced to give up the instrument due to family and professional responsibilities, his passion fell dormant. Until, that is, he relocated to Maui more than 13 years ago, lured to the tropics by images of Kanaha Beach, the world’s best destination for windsurfing, another of Ed’s passions. When he heard strains of his favorite instrument playing Hawaiian music, something clicked. In this slice of Eden, he knew life had come full circle. Finally, he was home.
Ed Garces and his wife Evelyn That epiphany resonates daily when he’s working at his profession, helping people realize their dreams on this island—a career that follows a successful tenure as a financial specialist and corporate controller. Born and raised in the Philippines, this focused professional earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree, then immigrated to Canada to pursue his high school sweetheart and a career in the financial field before moving to Hawaii. Now married close to four decades to Evelyn, Ed and his bride are the proud parents of two grown sons.
Passion in Action
Beyond windsurfing and the ukulele, Ed is passionate about the people of Maui and the island lifestyle. He’s also an avid slack-key guitar player and a runner who takes great pride in staying fit. Starting in October each year, he and Evelyn begin training for the Honolulu Marathon, an annual event held in December that draws runners from around the world. Through daily training runs at Keopuolani Park, this athletic professional and his wife prepare to tackle a 26.2-mile course that runs along Honolulu Harbor, into Chinatown and downtown Honolulu, then past Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head.
